In general, Qingdao has higher topography in the east than in the west . T he south and the north part of the city is hunching while the middle is sunken. There are 3 mountain groups in Qingdao . Located in the southeast part of the city, Laoshan Mountain has steep peaks, the main of which is 1,133 meters above sea level. T he zigzag coastal lines r ang e along caps and bays , with a total length of 862.64 kilometers (including island s coastal lines). There are 32 b ays distributed along the sea shore, among which, Fushan Bay is the venue of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Sailing Competition .

Located in the monsoon area of northern temperate zone, and on the coast of Yellow Sea, Qingdao has half monsoon climate and half marine climate . Its climate has a character of “no severe hot weather in summer and no bitter cold weather in winter”. Compared with inland area , the air temperature of Qingdao in winter is higher , and sweltering weather is less in summer. The air temperature experiences slower increase in spring and slower decrease in a utumn. Higher humidity, moderate precipitation, and the coincidence of wet season and warm season make a favorable climate.
     Air temperature
The annual average temperature of Qingdao is 12.7 ℃ . T he hottest month of Qingdao is August , which has average temperature of 25.3 ℃ , and hold high temperature record of 38.9 ℃ ( on August 8, 1981 ) . January has the lowest temperature , which is -0.5 ℃ on average , and holds low temperature record of -14.3 ℃ ( on January 30, 1980 ) .

      Precipitation
The a verage annual precipitation of Qingdao is 662.1mm , while rainfall is mainly concentrated between June and September. August sees the largest monthly precipitation of 151.1mm , and 10.2 rainy days on average. In September, the monthly precipitation is 62.7mm , while the number of rainy days is 6.5 averagely.。

        Temperature
The monthly average a ir temperature in August is 25.3 ℃ , and 21.8 ℃ in September. D aily average , maximum and minimum temperature all drop slowly d uring the se two months. D aily minimum temperature is commonly seen before sunrise at about 6:00, and the maximum temperature always be reached during noon time at about 13:00 .

        Precipitation
The average monthly precipitations in August and September are 151.1mm and 62.7mm respectively, but they both fluctuate greatly year by year. For August, the largest monthly precipitation is 482.2mm (in 2007), while the smallest precipitation is only 29.2mm (in 2002); For September, the largest monthly precipitation , 482.2mm , occurred in 1970, and in September of 1957 , there was no rainfall .

The number of r ainy days within every ten-day during August and September: from August to the first ten-day of September, there are average ly 3 rain ing events every ten-day ; for each of the last two ten-day of September, there are 1 ~ 2 rain ing event s .

Figure 14 Precipitation and number of rainy days of every ten-day during August and September (between 19 7 1 and 2000 )
        Relative humidity
The weather of Qingdao is controlled by West Pacific Subtropical High during summer, when damp and hot southerl y prevail s . In August and September, the monthly average relative humidity is 82% and 70% respectively, and the daily average relative humidity decrease s slowly. Humidity has great influence on body comfort. People may feel damp and hot sometimes during Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Sailing Competition (in August); However during 2008 Paralympic Games Sailing Competition (in Sepember), the weather will be comfortable and cool.
R elative humidity generally fluctuat es reversely with temperature . In the afternoon, as the temperature reaches its maxima , the relative humidity gets its minimum value, and when the temperature is the lowest in the early morning and at night, the relative humidity gets its maximum value . In August and September, the maximum relative humidity always occurred at about 6:00; and the minimum relative humidity occurred in afternoon at about 13:00~15:00.

        Wind
The monthly average wind speeds are both 4.5m /s for August and September . Southeasterly wind prevails in August, while northerly and southerly winds prevail in Sep t ember.

( The color bar indicates average wind speed. The direction and length of the radials indicate wind direction and frequency respectively. The dash concentric circles denote frequency, which starts by 1% and has interval of 2%. Figures in center denote frequency of calm wind . )

During daytime in August and September, wind speed rise to over 3.5m /s after 9:00. In August, the maximum wind speed occur s in the afternoon during 13:00 ~ 15:00 , when hourly average wind speed can reach 4.3m /s; In S e ptember, the maximum wind speed occurs between 14:00 and 15:00, with maximum hourly wind speed of 4.4m /s. After that time , wind speed decrease gradually, and reaches 3.5m /s at 21:00.

Figure 19 Average hourly wind speed in August and September (between 19 97 and 200 6 )
The so-called sea and land breeze circulation is the most impo r tant local wind system of Qingdao . During daytime, the incoming heat from the sun lift s the warmed air on land generating sea breeze , which blows from sea to land ; A fter sunset, land is cooled more faster, off-shore air flow will occur blowing from land to sea -- land breeze. In general, land breeze is much weaker than sea breeze.

Figure 20 Sketch maps of sea and land breeze
The period of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Sailing Competition ( August, 9 ~ August,23 ) is part of the mid summer season of Qingdao. According to statistics of meteorological data from 1971 to 2007, there may be a moderate or lower intensity rain ing event every 3 days. Thunderstorms occur once a week averagely , and they always strike in afternoon. The occurrences of fog and gust wind have low probability . Every 5 to 6 years, Qingdao is affected by tropical cyclone, companied by gust wind, torrential rain and sto r m surge. The probability of hail and high temperature(≥ 35 ℃ ) is ex t remely low.
During Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games Sailing Competition (September 6 ~ September 17) , probability of the above high impact weather s is relatively lower. Rainfall may occur once 4 ~ 5 days, and the occurrence probabilit ies of fog, tropical cyclone, thunder storm and gust wind are extremely low.
